A few hours later, Kris arrived at St Cuthbert’s hospital and quickly made his way to the Mary Keats Maternity ward. He saw them ahead – Beth and Dan sitting around Helene’s bed. Slowing up, he approached. Had she had the baby? Yes, she had! ‘Hello,’ he said, cheerfully. Helene smiled up at him. ‘Hello, Helene.’

‘Hello, Kris,’ she said in her Scandinavian accent. ‘Meet Erik.’

‘Erik?’

‘Spelt with a K at the end.’

Kris peered down at the little bundle in Helene’s arms. His heart lurched on seeing the little one at his mother’s breast. It took his breath away. He remembered twenty-eight years ago seeing Dan like this and ten years later, Harry. He glanced over at Beth. She smiled at him. He asked Helene how she was. He hugged his son. ‘Congratulations, son. I’m so happy for you.’

‘Thanks, Dad.’

‘You’ll make a far better father than I ever did.’

‘Don’t say that, Dad.’

He turned to Beth. ‘He’s got Dan’s nose, don’t you think?’

‘Isn’t it marvellous?’ she said.

Dan sat with Helene and Erik, whispering to her and making her laugh.

‘We’re grandparents, Beth. Who would have thought it?’

She didn’t answer and Kris realised she was crying. He didn’t know whether to put his arm around her. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d touched her with any affection.

‘I’m sorry,’ she said. ‘I’m so happy but I just keep thinking…’

Kris knew what she was about to say.

‘Harry should know about this, Kris. It’s so unfair. He should be here with us now. He should know he’s an uncle now.’
